Where this site stands today

Two cookies, and only if you accept

This site uses Google Analytics to know how many people visit it and which pages interest them. It is the only measurement in place, and it starts only after your explicit consent.

Until you accept, nothing happens: no cookie is set, nothing is written to your browser, and no request is sent to Google. That is not a promise, it is checkable: open your browser's developer tools, network tab, and reload the page before choosing.

We use no advertising network, no social media buttons and no retargeting tools.

The two cookies, in detail

NameSet byWhat it doesLifetime
_gaGoogle AnalyticsTells visitors apart from one another, without knowing who they are13 months
_ga_QBMF3S79Q3Google AnalyticsKeeps the state of your current visit13 months

Google keeps these cookies for two years by default. We have brought that down to thirteen months, the limit recommended by the Belgian Data Protection Authority and by the French CNIL.

The recipient is Google Ireland Limited, which may transfer data to the United States under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. The legal basis for this processing is your consent, and nothing else.

One technical choice we made for you

Most sites load their typefaces from Google's servers. It is convenient and free, but it hands your IP address to a third party in the first millisecond, before you have had any chance to say anything. A German court fined a site publisher for exactly this in 2022.

So we downloaded those typefaces and serve them from our own domain. The site is slightly faster, and your IP address goes nowhere.

It is also why the analytics tag is not loaded in a "standby" mode when the page opens, as some Google settings suggest. A standby tag still contacts Google's servers, so your IP address would leave before you agreed. Here, it does not.

What Belgian law requires

In Belgium, cookies and trackers are governed by the Code of Economic Law and by the GDPR, under the supervision of the Data Protection Authority. The main rules are these:

  • No cookie that is not strictly necessary may be set before valid consent has been obtained.
  • Refusing must be as easy as accepting, with a refuse button at the first level of the banner and of equal visibility.
  • Consent requires a positive act. Continuing to browse, scrolling or closing the banner do not count as agreement.
  • Pre-ticked boxes are prohibited.
  • Consent must be withdrawable at any time, as easily as it was given.
  • Cookie walls and deceptive designs are prohibited.

Our banner applies every one of these: Refuse all and Accept all carry exactly the same visual weight, there is no close cross that would count as tacit agreement, no box is pre-ticked, and the site stays fully usable if you refuse.

What your browser remembers of your choice

Your decision is kept in your browser's local storage, under a key named fg-consent, so that you are not asked again on every page. It lasts thirteen months, after which you are asked again.

This storage is strictly necessary: without it we could not honour your refusal. It holds only your decision, no personal data, and it never leaves your device.

Changing your mind, at any time

The Manage my cookies link at the bottom of every page reopens the panel and lets you change your mind in either direction.

If you withdraw your consent, measurement is switched off and both cookies are deleted immediately. A refusal that left the cookies in place would not be a refusal.

You can also clear this site's storage from your browser settings, under site data or privacy. It will not affect your use of the site in any way.
